Hollywood Clashes with OpenAI Over Sora 2’s Deepfake Capabilities
OpenAI's Sora 2, a text-to-video application, has ignited both enthusiasm and controversy. The invite-only iOS app amassed over one million downloads within five days, outperforming ChatGPT's early adoption rates. Its ability to generate 10-second clips from simple prompts captivated users, propelling it to the top of Apple's App Store charts in the U.S. and Canada.
The euphoria was short-lived. Major Hollywood studios, including Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Comcast, accused OpenAI of enabling copyright infringement. Unauthorized videos featuring protected characters like James Bond and Nintendo's Mario surfaced, prompting the Motion Picture Association to demand accountability. OpenAI initially offered an "opt-out" system for copyright holders but reversed course under pressure, adopting an "opt-in" model instead.
